Morinda citrifolia commonly known as NONI, or the Indian mulberry, is a tree that belongs to coffee family. It is native to Southeast Asia but has now spread throughout the world. Tahiti remains the most prominent commercial growing location today.
Noni grows in shady forests and open rocky or sandy shores. It reaches maturity in less than two years and yields about 8-10 kilograms of fruits per month throughout the year. It is very tolerant to saline conditions, drought conditions and to secondary soils as well. It grows up to 30 feet tall with large, simple, dark green, shiny and deeply veined leaves. It produces small white flowers and its fruits are pungent in odor. (That’s why the fruits are called cheese fruits or vomit fruits). Seeds are edible when fried. Weaver ants are attracted to the noni tree since they use the leaves of this tree to make their nests. These ants protect the plant from some plant-parasitic insects. The smell of the fruit attracts fruit bats, who in turn aid in dispersing the seeds.
